First-generation students who struggle with the transition to college may abandon their education.
More than one-third of incoming students at the Newark campus are first-generation students, and everything we do revolves around their success.
The Buckeye Generation Learning Community (BGLC) was created in 2012 to improve the academic performance, retention rates and graduation outcomes for first-generation students. The program – which accepts 80 first-year, first-generation students annually – addresses four main areas: academic support, social engagement, peer coaching and financial support.
BGLC students get better grades and are more likely to stay in school than their first-generation peers who are not part of the learning community. Your support will allow us to increase enrollment in the BGLC by 50 percent to 120 students, starting in autumn 2018.
