From an early age, I knew I wanted to go to college. My family has always encouraged and supported me in working toward this goal. We tried to save for college, but had some bumps in the road that made it difficult. At age 14, I decided that I wanted to be a marriage and family therapist. Throughout high school, I chose my classes carefully and worked hard as I got closer to college.
I am from a rural town in Ohio and thought attending Ohio State would be a dream come true. After touring the campus, I knew it was the place I had to be to continue my education. When I saw the final costs, I worried I could never afford college.
The Land Grant Scholarship I received changed everything.
I was able to devote my focus solely to my studies and activities during my time at Ohio State. With this opportunity, I could accept a research assistant position rather than trying to balance another job. I received hands-on experience in evidence-based research that helps to grow the field of psychology. The scholarship also gave me the flexibility to expand my knowledge and perspective by studying abroad in London.
My scholarship opened up a world of opportunities that helped form the direction of my career. I graduated from Ohio State in the spring of 2020 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and minor in sociology. The experience I had at Ohio State led me to pursue my master of arts degree in mental health counseling with a specialty in marriage and family therapy. In five months, I will graduate and finally achieve my dreams, becoming a marriage and family therapist and begin my job in counseling right after graduation.
As I reflect on this journey, I know it would not have been possible without the scholarship I received. It truly was life-changing. I am grateful for those who made it possible! Thank you to everyone who helps to give an amazing opportunity to so many students like me.
